Member of Parliament for Yamacraw

About Me: An advocate for child and family welfare, the Hon. Melanie S. Griffin, has made a major impact on the social landscape of the Country, particularly through the enactment of three major pieces of legislation – The Residential Care Facilities Act 2004, the Child Protection Act, 2007 and the Domestic Violence (Protection Orders) Act, 2007. Mrs. Griffin has also been a champion for the rights of persons with disabilities and has produced a draft Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities) Bill, 2007 which is expected to be laid in Parliament later this year. Additionally, she was instrumental in the expansion of the Disability Affairs Unit to a Division with its own office and resource centre, as well as the implementation of an allowance for special needs children under the age of 16 years certified disabled.

Political Highlights: Mrs. Griffin currently serves as the Member of Parliament for the Yamacraw Constituency. She was elected in 2002 and 2007. Prior to that, she was appointed a Senator in 1999. She also served as a member of the Party’s Candidates Committee and as a Vice-Chairman with responsibility for Women’s Affairs. Mrs. Griffin started her political career very early as a member of the first PLP youth organization which was the forerunner to the Progressive Young Liberals.

Education: Mrs. Griffin received her early education at St. Joseph’s Primary School, St. Augustine’s College and Government High School, completing her tertiary education at The College of The Bahamas where she received an Associate of Arts Degree. She also obtained a Diploma in Applied Church Music from the Baptist Institute.

Civics/Social: Mrs. Griffin has served in many social and professional organizations. She currently serves as the Chairman of the Trustee Board, a Choir Director and Usher Board Member at Judaea Baptist Church where she is a founding member. The founder of Eastern Community Association, formerly the Yamacraw Community Development Association, Mrs. Griffin was instrumental in the formation of the ECA Youth Marching & Concert Band and the establishment of the ECA Community Festival and Christmas & Tree Lighting Service, among other community initiatives. A Director of the NBBC Reunion Youth Choir, Mrs. Griffin has also served as a Patron for the Debutantes Programme for young ladies and the Miss Full Figured Bahamas Pageant.

Professional/Career:  Mrs. Griffin is currently the Firm Manager at Sharon Wilson & Co. and has worked at the Sheraton Grand Resort, Paradise Island, The Bahamas Hotel Employers’ Association, European American Bank, Business Systems Limited, The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Local Government and The College of The Bahamas.
As the Member of Parliament for Yamacraw, Mrs. Griffin plans to continue with community development projects such as the creation of a community center and community clean-up programmes. She also plans to continue personal development and job skills programmes that empower youth, as well as establish entrepreneurial programmes to encourage small business development and other programmes for all segments of the community.
